The Lowy Medical Research Institute has a dedicated staff of clinicians, scientists, and administrators working together to advance clinical and laboratory research on Macular Telangiectasia type 2. LMRI staff are based at the La Jolla headquarters. From there, they work closely with extramural investigators and clinical sites to coordinate LMRI’s laboratory science and clinical research efforts. Scientific staff also work in the on-site laboratory to study specific aspects of the disease.
Martin Friedlander, M.D., Ph.D
President of The Lowy Medical Research Institute;
Professor, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, The Scripps Research Institute;
Chief, Retina Services, Department of Ophthalmology, Scripps Clinic
Dr. Friedlander is the President of LMRI, Professor at TSRI, and Chief of Retina Services at the Scripps Clinic. He oversees a laboratory program that is focused on understanding basic mechanisms that regulate the growth of new blood vessels as well as cell-cell interactions that help maintain normal neuronal function in the retina. His laboratory is interested in “translational” research with the goal of identifying new therapies to treat retinal diseases, including Macular Telangiectasia type 2.
Jennifer Trombley R.N., M.S.N., M.S.T.O.M., C.C.R.C.
Clinical Trials Global Project Director, LMRI
Jennifer Trombley is the Global Project Director of Clinical Trials at the Lowy Medical Research Institute. She has over 40 years of acute nursing care experience, plus extensive experience with translational research and clinical research coordination.
Michael Dorrell, Ph.D.
Senior Staff Scientist, LMRI
Associate Professor of Biology, Point Loma Nazarene University
Dr. Dorrell is a scientist at the Lowy Medical Research Institute. He oversees collaborations with extramural researchers, establishes connections with outside researchers who can help with LMRI’s MacTel research, and provides feedback on intramural projects.
Lea Scheppke, Ph.D.
Director of Scientific Communications, LMRI
Dr. Lea Scheppke is the Director of Scientific Communications at the Lowy Medical Research Institute. She oversees scientific communication with the public and with LMRI’s scientific collaborators. She prepares internal white papers and external content about MacTel for the public. She also tracks the progress of laboratory research projects and facilitates collaborations between extramural investigators.
Kevin Eade, Ph.D.
Staff Scientist, LMRI
Dr. Kevin Eade is a scientist at the Lowy Medical Research Institute. He is currently developing stem cell technologies to study the cells of the human retina from patients afflicted with Macular Telangiectasia type 2.
Marin Gantner, Ph.D.
Staff Scientist, LMRI
Dr. Marin Gantner is a scientist at the Lowy Medical Research Institute. She heads LMRI’s metabolism research program. She is studying metabolism in the retina, and developing the tools to assess metabolism in MacTel retinas.
Sarah Victor is a Research Technician at the Lowy Medical Research Institute. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Point Loma Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance.
Mr. Regis Fallon is a Research Technician at the Lowy Medical Research Institute. Mr. Fallon graduated Cum Laude from the University of California, Los Angeles in June 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics.
